In February 1995, the South Western Railway Society Inc. was formed, primarily to foster the restoration of Birregurra station and other rail infrastructure along the Warrnambool line (particularly the Colac turntable and associated facilities), an interest in railway history and to liaise with and support train operators in the region.
In 2006, that body was wound up and early in 2007, a new organisation, the Geelong & South Western Rail Heritage Society Inc. was formed, to continue most of the original aims and objectives of the South Western Railway Society Inc.
Aims and objectives of the Society are:-
- To retain and enhance railway infrastructure and rolling stock for the Geelong and South Western Railway.
- To foster an interest in railway history.
- To encourage a liaison with railway operators to provide support for suitable projects.
- To promote general railway activities.
New members are welcome and wider community support is sought. Contact us to join.
